Download WordPress Using a Linux Command
WordPress is one of the most popular Content Management Systems (CMS) used by millions of websites worldwide. If you are a Linux user, you can easily download WordPress using a simple command in the terminal.
Prerequisites
Before downloading WordPress, ensure that you have the following requirements in place:
- Linux-based Operating System (OS) such as Ubuntu, CentOS, or Debian.
- Terminal or Command-Line Interface (CLI) access.
- Access to the internet to download the necessary files.
Steps to Download WordPress
Here are the steps to follow to download WordPress using a Linux command:
Open the terminal in your Linux system.
Navigate to the directory where you want to download WordPress files.
Enter the following command to download the latest version of WordPress:
sudo wget https://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz
This command downloads the latest version of WordPress compressed in a tar.gz format.
The 'sudo' command is used to gain administrator privileges and the 'wget' command is used to initiate the download.
Once the download is complete, extract the files from the downloaded archive. Use the following command:
sudo tar -xvzf latest.tar.gz
This command extracts the WordPress files from the downloaded archive and places them into a new directory named 'wordpress'.
Move the 'wordpress' directory to the desired location using the following command:
sudo mv wordpress /var/www/html/
Here, '/var/www/html/' denotes the directory where you want to install WordPress. You can replace this path with any location of your choice.
The 'mv' command is used to move the 'wordpress' directory to a new location.
Change the permissions of the WordPress directory to make it readable and writable by the web server using the following command:
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/wordpress
The 'chown' command changes the ownership of the 'wordpress' directory to the web server user 'www-data' to allow it to read and write to the directory.
Finally, access the WordPress installation by opening a web browser and entering the URL of your web server, followed by '/wordpress'. For example, 'http://localhost/wordpress' if you're accessing the installation on the same machine.
And that’s it! You have successfully downloaded WordPress using a Linux command. Now you can proceed with the installation and configuration of your WordPress site.
